Fable Combat Finally Revealed in First Gamescom 2026 Hands-On

Fable's first Gamescom 2026 hands-on reveals its evolved Strength, Skill and Will combat system, with seamless melee, ranged attacks and magic.

Fable Combat Finally Revealed in First Gamescom 2026 Hands-On

Fable has received its first-ever playable press and creator demo at Gamescom 2026, giving us the most detailed look yet at how combat works in Playground Games' reboot of the legendary RPG series.

The classic Strength, Skill and Will philosophy has evolved into a fluid combat system that lets players switch seamlessly between melee weapons, ranged attacks and magic during battle. The Gamescom demo featured a quest called Mud and Death, where the Hero joins Heroes' Guild leader Humphry on a journey into a haunted mine filled with ghosts and skeletons.

The hands-on also demonstrated how different weapons, spells and enemy weaknesses can dramatically change the way encounters play out. Fable is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027, with Premium Edition early access beginning February 18.

Strength, Skill and Will Returns

Playground Games has evolved Fable's classic Strength, Skill and Will approach into a system where melee, ranged weapons and magic can be combined seamlessly. Rather than constantly switching menus or loadout bars, the different combat options are immediately accessible, allowing players to combine abilities and weapons during an encounter.

Melee Combat Gets Brutal

The Gamescom demo equipped the Hero with a two-handed Bower Hammer capable of powerful strikes and attacks that can hit multiple enemies. Players can dodge and parry incoming attacks, use charged moves and trigger weapon-specific finishers. Skeleton enemies can also be dismembered during combat and may continue fighting even after losing body parts.

Fable's Magic Looks Wild

The demo showed a wide selection of spells including Fireball, Lightning, Blades, Lift, Rush and Push. These abilities can be combined with other attacks to control groups of enemies or create powerful combat combinations. Befowl also brings back Fable's trademark humour by transforming enemies into chickens, including undead chickens when the spell is used against undead enemies.

Bows, Crossbows and Enemy Weak Points

Ranged combat was demonstrated using the accurate Deepwood Bow and the faster Repeater Crossbow. Ranged weapons can target specific enemy weak points, such as limbs, while the Lantern Keeper mini-boss has a lantern weak point that makes ranged attacks particularly useful.

The Mud and Death Quest

The playable Gamescom mission is called Mud and Death. It follows the Hero and Heroes' Guild leader Humphry into a once-flooded and now-haunted mine. The area introduces Hollow Folk skeletons, fast-moving Wraiths and the Lantern Keeper mini-boss, giving players opportunities to experiment with Fable's different combat systems.

When Does Fable Release?
