Fable's Combat Gets a Major Upgrade — New Gamescom Gameplay Shows Parries, Magic & More

Fable's Combat Gets a Major Upgrade — New Gamescom Gameplay Shows Parries, Magic & More

Fable has received another major Gamescom 2026 showcase, this time putting the spotlight on Playground Games' redesigned combat system.

The new system is built around what Playground calls style-weaving, allowing players to move seamlessly between melee attacks, ranged weapons and magic instead of treating each combat style as a separate system.

Hands-on demonstrations also revealed parries, dodges, finishers, enemy weak points, battlefield-control spells and different enemy types designed to encourage players to constantly switch tactics.

Fable Introduces Style-Weaving Combat

Playground Games describes Fable's new combat philosophy as style-weaving. The system lets players combine Strength, Skill and Will by moving naturally between melee weapons, ranged attacks and magical abilities. Different weapons, spells and abilities can be combined to create aggressive, tactical, ranged, evasive or crowd-control focused playstyles.

Parries, Dodges and Melee Finishers

The Gamescom hands-on demo showed a much more involved melee system. Players can dodge incoming attacks, time parries, use charged attacks and trigger weapon-specific finishers. Heavy weapons such as the Bower Hammer can strike multiple enemies, while successful attacks can also dismember certain enemies and create openings for follow-up attacks.

Magic Can Completely Change a Fight

Playground demonstrated a broad selection of spells including Fireball, Lightning, Blades, Lift, Rush, Push and Befowl. Lift can suspend groups of enemies before slamming them back to the ground, Rush teleports the Hero behind targets, and Befowl temporarily transforms enemies into chickens. Players can combine these powers with melee and ranged attacks without repeatedly navigating combat menus.

Ranged Combat Targets Weak Points

Bows and crossbows provide another layer to Fable's combat. The Deepwood Bow offers slower, accurate shots while the Repeater Crossbow fires weaker bolts rapidly. Ranged weapons can target vulnerable body parts and enemy weak points, making them especially useful against flying enemies and stronger opponents.

Enemies Force Players to Change Tactics

The demo featured several enemy types with different strengths and weaknesses. Hollow Folk appear in melee, ranged and armored variants, Wraiths can create additional enemies during encounters, and the Lantern Keeper mini-boss combines flight, explosive attacks and the ability to summon Wraiths. These encounters are designed to encourage players to mix combat styles rather than rely on a single attack.

Difficulty Can Be Tailored to the Player

Playground Games has confirmed that players will be able to choose the combat intensity that suits them. Those primarily interested in Albion's world, characters and story can choose a more relaxed experience, while players looking for a greater challenge can select combat that pushes them to make fuller use of Fable's mechanics and systems.

Fable Launches February 23, 2027

Fable is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027. Premium Edition owners can receive up to five days of early access beginning February 18. The game is coming to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and PlayStation 5, and will also be available through Game Pass.
