Son of Thanjai Gets New Gamescom 2026 Trailer — Medieval South India Action Adventure Coming 2027

Xbox featured Son of Thanjai during its second Gamescom 2026 broadcast, giving the Indian-developed action-adventure another major international showcase.

The appearance builds on the game's earlier gameplay reveal and gives Ayelet Studio another opportunity to show its alternate-history vision of the Chola world to a global audience.

Son of Thanjai is set in an alternate-history reimagining of the 11th-century Chola dynasty of South India.

Rather than using the setting as simple background decoration, Ayelet Studio says the game is being built around the culture, architecture, social structure and history that inspired it.

Players take control of Vinnendhiran, a young prince who begins the story sheltered by privilege while his kingdom faces threats from both inside and outside the court.

As his father's condition worsens and political enemies close in, Vinnendhiran is forced to understand the kingdom beyond the palace walls and confront the consequences of power, loyalty and leadership.

One of Son of Thanjai's defining gameplay elements is the Surul Vaal, a flexible whip-like sword connected to South Indian martial traditions.

Ayelet Studio is combining direct combat with stealth, deception and investigation, allowing players to approach hostile areas with either aggression or a more deliberate plan.

The game's environments include temple towns, marketplaces, agricultural areas, courts and roads populated by characters with their own concerns and routines.

Ayelet Studio describes the project as culturally grounded rather than simply inspired by a generic fantasy version of India, with the Chennai-based team drawing directly from Tamil history and heritage.

Son of Thanjai is currently targeting a 2027 release.

The game is confirmed for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. A more specific release date has not yet been announced through the game's official website or storefront listings.
